My Favorite DIY Personal Care Products
Over the past year I have stopped using almost all store-bought personal products with long lists of ingredients and instead simplified my collection by switching to ingredients I’ve heard of. Here are a few of my tried and true staples:
Body Wash
- 2 cups filtered water
- 1 cup liquid castile soap
- 2 tablespoons vegetable glycerin
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 40-50 drops of essential oil glass pump bottle
- ball jar to store extras
Oil suggestions:
- Invigorate: {Jade} Lemon, Grapefruit and Peppermint/Spearmint (add less mint than other scents to prevent overpowering)
- Relax: Valor, Frank and Lemon, or Lavender and Orange
- Your choice!
–
Shaving Cream
- pump bottle
- 1/2 cup olive oil (or another oil)
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup Castile soap
- 10 drops (or more if you’d like it stronger) essential oil
Oil suggestions: lavender, grapefruit, ylang ylang + orange
Place all ingredients in bowl and whisk to combine. Apply a pea sized amount to skin before shaving.
Foaming Hand Soap
- foaming soap dispenser
- 2 tablespoons castile soap
- 1/4 teaspoon Vegetable Glycerine
- 8 drops Thieves essential oil
- 2 drops Peppermint essential oil
- Fill the rest of the way with water
Add soap, vegetable glycerine and oils to the dispenser, and fill the rest of the way with water. Gently shake, if necessary.
Mouthwash
–
- 1 cup filtered water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 5 drops Thieves oil
- 5 drops Peppermint oil
Shake before each use. Use as you regularly would mouthwash.
Whipped Body Butter
- one 16 ounce jar, or two 8 ounce jars
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E (optional)
- 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder (optional)
Oil Suggestions:
- Sleep: Lavender, Cedarwood, Peace and Calming
- Pain: Panaway, Peppermint, Copaiba
- Uplifting: Stress Away + Peppermint, Joy + Lemon, Valor + Frank
- Get Well: RC, Thieves, Peppermint
- Smooth & Silky: Lavender + Frank, Lemon + Grapefruit + Geranium
1.) Soften shea butter, if solid, in microwave for 30 seconds.
2.) Add coconut oil, shea butter and vitamin E to mixer and whip for 3-5 minutes.
3.) Add 10 drops of each essential oil and continue mixing 1-2 minutes.
4.) If desired, add arrowroot powder and mix for another 1 minute.
5.) Scoop into jar.
Face Option #1: Roller
I switch between option 1 and 2, but have found both very effective. The roller is the lazy person’s way to have clear skin!
- 15 ml roller bottle
- 3/4 full of vitamin e
- 1/4 full of witch hazel
- 10 drops Frankincense essential oil
- 10 drops Purification essential oil
Rinse face. Use roller to apply concoction. Use fractionated coconut oil to remove any remaining make up.
Face Option #2: Wash
–
Rinse face with warm water. Take a dab of raw honey, plus a few drops of jojoba oil and rub all over face. Rinse off. At night, I will occasionally put on a drop or two of Frank, Cedarwood, Lemon (as long as I’m not going to be in the sun), Tea Tree, Lavender, Purification, or Geranium to promote healthy skin.
*I will also occasionally put a thin layer of raw honey on my acne prone areas in the morning for about a half hour while I eat breakfast and drink my coffee.

Making a bunch of these recipes stat! I just used an app (I think it was called Think Dirty?) which told me the majority of the bath products I was buying thinking they were OK for me actually weren’t. Sigh. Looking forward to having some new solutions to test out.
Let me know what you think!
Ok update!
I made the body wash and used it once. I like it, but wish it was thicker. I love the face roller! I use it every night. I made the shaving cream and will make the body butter tonight but haven’t used either yet.
So far, so good. Thanks for the recipes!
